When you decide to watch a movie to catch up on Sam Reid's filmography, and instead you're hit in the face with absolutely stunning performances by Olivia Cooke, Bill Nighy and Douglas Booth.
Like, wow. The Limehouse Golem is fantastic. Olivia Cooke is impressive (I had started to gather that from the few episodes of House of the Dragon I had seen), Bill Nighy is a master act (I will forever have his scenes in Vincent and the Doctor engraved in my mind) and Douglas Booth can make his performance shine in even the dumbest of movies (I'm a Douglas Booth fan, sue me - the 2013 Romeo and Juliet is only good because of him and Hailie Stenfield, otherwise it's, oof, not good, and I know Tumblr unironically loves Jupiter Ascending but we have to agree that his perf in it is glorious; also, ha, amazing, he plays Dan Leno the same year as he plays Bingley in P&P&Zombies, talk about range - anyway, where was I).
Sam Reid, María Valverde and Daniel Mays were just cherries on top of an already thrilling cake. Saw the plot twist coming, but was despite it immensely thrilled.
Tumblr media
Also this movie is so incredibly queer. None of these actors can play straight or cis to save their lives. Not that I think the script was in any way straight nor cis to begin with.

OUIJA (2014)
Tumblr media
Hasbro Studios had a hand in making this cash grab. An interesting but ultimately not that scary and mostly just sad film about teens dying and then missing each other. Similar to Tarot in vibes but at least Tarot had some creative spooky creatures. Most of the movie basically takes place in one house and it isn’t even that interesting of a house so the setting is boring too. There are better ways to spend your time, let me have watched this so you don’t have to.
⭐⭐.5
Trigger Warning Suicide
Tumblr media
Okay so she doesn’t get tied up by Christmas lights but she does hang herself with them and I think that still counts towards what I said in my Violent Night review. Especially because there was a Christmas light strangulation in Silent Night, Deadly Night. We are just not going to stop seeing twinkling lights used as a weapon! But this movie starts out really sad because it is literally a funeral and all the teens think their friend killed herself when she was driven to it by some malevolent spirit or something but right now it’s all just a really emotional time. Sad! Laine finds the Ouija board at her dead friend Debbie’s house and wants to use it to try and communicate with Debbie! She gets a group together and they use the board to try and speak to the dead! Spooky!
Tumblr media
It seems like it works too, they are able to communicate with someone named “D” and who says, “HI, FRIEND.” They assume it has to be Debbie and are happy until the next day when they all get a “HI, FRIEND” in their real lives and it is very creepy! They try to talk to Debbie again to ask her what is up and figure out they have been talking to “D.Z.” and are now feeling mighty suspicious. They also learn that Mother is watching and is going to hurt them so they need to run! Scary! As soon as the entity kills another one of the group off instead of banding together they all fall apart, come ON. But Laine is able to get one of them to go help her explore the attic and she finds a creepy doll and pictures which lead her to finding DZ’s family history and living sister who gives them instructions to find her body and snip her mouth strings (her mouth is sewn shut).
Tumblr media
Laine gets in there and is taking her time, I would be speed running that shit, but they want drama, okay. She snips the thread on the corpse's mouth and poof, the angry mother disappears. But wait! Our friends are still dying! Turns out the living sister pulled a mean prank on us! Sad! DZ is the evil one and the mother was trying to help! Wack! Now they have to go burn the board and the body. They lose one more member on the way to the furnace but ultimately get the job done with help from Debbie’s ghost. Everything seems fine and well until the planchette is found in Laine's room when she returns home? I don’t love when a movie ends on a cliffhanger for no real reason other than it can.

I can't really explain this...but I'm conviced that Kaitlyn Dever (The Last of Us) and Katie Douglas (The Girl Who Escaped) would've been great actresses to play the roles of Éponine and Azelma Thénardier respectively!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, if I may add, they would be perfect alongside Olivia Colman from the BBC adaptation (2018-2019). I really liked her as Mme. Thénardier (to be honest, I liked a lot of things about that adaptation, and while it wasn't "perfect", it was a good adaptation).
